Why photo booth touchscreens fail

Almost every photo booth has a touchscreen of some kind, and they lead a harder life than most screens do. They are touched thousands of times a night by people who have had a drink, loaded in and out of vans, and left running for hours at a time. Failures come down to accidents, wear, or simply the end of a service life.

How they fail depends on the type. Some booths use a touch layer built into the display itself. Others — the mirror style booths in particular — use a frame of infrared LED transmitters around the edge of the glass, and those degrade over time rather than breaking all at once. The symptom is usually a screen that still lights up and still shows the booth software, but no longer registers a touch where the guest actually pressed.

What we do

Booth Junkie offers a repair and replacement service for most touchscreen devices. We start by diagnosing what has actually failed, because a screen that is not responding correctly has not necessarily reached the end of its life.

Where the original touchscreen can be repaired, we repair it, and then run a 16-point calibration across the surface. That matters more than it sounds: a screen calibrated at only a handful of points can read accurately in the middle and drift badly toward the corners, which is exactly where a booth’s buttons tend to sit.

Where a repair is not possible, our workshop is equipped to remove the old screen and fit a new 10-point touch system. That gets the same 16-point calibration afterwards, so a replaced screen is held to the same standard as a repaired one.

We can also replace the entire glass system on Magic Mirror booths, done at the same workshop.

What to tell us

The more you can describe up front, the more we can tell you before you travel:

  • The booth. A mirror booth, an oval booth, or something custom built.
  • What the screen does. Nothing at all, responds in the wrong place, or works only intermittently.
  • Whether the display still works. A screen that still lights up and shows the software is a different problem from one that has gone dark.

A screen reading in the wrong place is a different fault from one that has stopped responding altogether, and knowing which you have saves a wasted journey.

Booking your booth in

Repairs are done by appointment. You bring the equipment to our workshop, our support team carries out the work, and we arrange a time for you to collect it.

We usually ask for a 24 hour window to complete the work in full, but in most cases it is possible to drop the equipment off and collect it again later the same day — which is generally what operators want when there is an event at the weekend.

Get a screen looked at

Tell us the booth, the screen, and what it is doing wrong, and we will tell you whether it is likely to be a repair or a replacement before you travel.

What it takes to put right depends on the screen and the booth it is fitted to, so get in touch with the details and we will come back to you.

Software, not hardware?

If the screen responds but the booth is misbehaving, the knowledgebase covers touch calibration and the settings that cause it.
