Google no longer accepts your normal Gmail password for third-party apps like Booth Junkie sending through Gmail’s SMTP server – you need to generate a separate App Password instead, once per Gmail account.
Before you start
Your Google account needs 2-Step Verification turned on – App Passwords aren’t available without it. If you haven’t already set this up, go to myaccount.google.com/security and turn on 2-Step Verification first.
Generating the App Password
- Go to myaccount.google.com/apppasswords and sign in if prompted.
- Under App name, type something you’ll recognise later, such as “Booth Junkie”.
- Select Create.
- Google shows you a 16-character password, displayed in four groups of four letters. Copy it – you won’t be able to see it again after closing this screen.
Using it in Booth Junkie
Back in Customising the email settings, paste this 16-character App Password into the SMTP password field – not your normal Gmail password. Spaces in the displayed password don’t matter either way; Google accepts it with or without them.
If you ever need to revoke it
Return to myaccount.google.com/apppasswords and remove it from the list – this immediately stops that password working, without affecting your normal Google sign-in. Do this if you ever retire a booth PC or suspect the password’s been exposed.
