Guests step in, the flash fires, and what comes back is a white rectangle. Sometimes you can make out a shoulder or a bit of hair; often there is nothing at all. The live view looked fine right up until the shutter went.
If you are shooting with flash, there is one cause that accounts for most of these, and it takes about ten seconds to fix.
The camera is metering for a room the flash is about to erase
Cameras have automatic modes — P (Program), Av, Tv — that measure the available light immediately before the shot and set themselves accordingly. In a dim venue that means the camera chooses a slow shutter, a wide aperture and a high ISO, all correct for a dark room.
Then the flash fires.
The camera has exposed for near-darkness and is then hit with a burst of light many times brighter than anything it measured. The result is a blown-out frame, and in a dark venue with a powerful flash that frame is often pure white.
Nothing is broken. The camera did exactly what it was asked to do; it was simply asked the wrong question.
The fix: shoot in Manual
With flash, use M (Manual) and keep the settings fixed for every photo.
This sounds like more work than it is. A flash is far brighter than the venue, so it overpowers whatever the room is doing — which means one set of settings works all evening, and usually carries over to the next event without being touched. That consistency is one of the main reasons to use flash in a booth at all.
Set it up once:
- Put the camera in
M. - Set a shutter speed at or below your camera’s flash sync speed — going faster than sync gives a dark band across the frame instead.
- Choose an aperture and ISO that expose a test shot correctly with the flash firing.
- Take a real test photo with someone standing where guests will stand. Judge it from the print or the file, not from the live view.
- Leave it alone.
Adjust flash power rather than ISO if the whole frame is still too bright — it is the cleaner control and it does not change how the room behind your subject records.
When Program mode is the right answer
If you are running a constant LED rather than a flash, P is fine and often better. The light in the room is the light in the photo, so letting the camera measure it just before the shot gives a sensible result and adapts as the venue changes through the evening.
The rule is simply:

Mixing them up in the other direction — manual settings with a constant light in a venue that gets darker as the night goes on — gives the opposite symptom, photos that drift steadily darker.
Other things that produce a white frame
Manual mode fixes the common case. If the frame is still blown out:
- Flash power too high for the distance. Booth subjects stand much closer than a flash’s default power assumes. Turn it down; a booth rarely needs anywhere near full power.
- A second light nobody accounted for. A window in daylight, a bright uplighter, or a video light left on by a photographer sharing the room.
- ISO left high from a previous job. Easy to miss, because it is invisible in the live view.
- The flash firing twice. A pre-flash for metering plus the main burst, on a trigger not set to the right mode.
